On the Horizon....
Throughout the year in English 6, I cover parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization. Students are given new spelling and vocabulary words weekly. Literature is comprised of reading and discussing Aesop Fables and Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. Students are always encouraged to read and a book report is required each quarter.
In English 9, literature is strongly emphasized. Each week reading comprehension is addressed by reading short stories, plays, and poems in the students' textbook, Themes in Literature. Students will also read and discuss The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Book reports are required each quarter. Students are also given new spelling and vocabulary words weekly. Students are also given an in-class essay on a topic to complete each week for PSAT practice. A final research paper is completed at the end of the year.
In Summit English 9, students' learning needs is a primary focus. At the beginning of each year, I give each student a learning styles quiz so that I may learn what techniques would work best for students to be successful in class. All students learn differently, so I incorporate movies, visual aids, one-on-one time, and lecture/note taking in my class.
