My name is Karen Hamlin, and I’m
the Director of Bands at Sunrise Christian Academy. I began teaching
at Sunrise in 2009 as the choir director for junior high and high
school, and eventually took over as Band Director in 2010 (Grades
4-12), helping students fulfill the passion that I share with them
for instrumental music. I earned a Bachelor of Music degree magna cum
laude from Wichita State University in 1997, and I earned my Master
of Music degree in Flute Performance (also from WSU) in 1999. I am
certified through the Association of Christian Schools International
My favorite thing about teaching
music is having the opportunity to start kids in 4th grade
and watch them progress through high school. They are so excited when
they begin. It is a great experience to see them grow up and use
music to glorify God and lift others up.
I bring a great deal of experience
to my craft, having also taught home and studio-based private lessons
for over 20 years. Dana’s Music Studio, Bethel College, Bethany
College, and WSU (graduate teaching assistant) are a few previous
stops in my music teaching career. I began my career in Christian
education in 2006 at the now-closed Riverlawn Christian Academy.
I also enjoy performing regularly
with local orchestras and other groups, most recently with the Newton
Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra on flute and piccolo. I have also
served in the pit orchestra for SCA’s high school drama department,
most recently playing flute for the pit orchestra on Hello Dolly
at the Orpheum Theatre.
I am married
to Jason Hamlin, and we have 3 kids—two of whom already run the
halls of Sunrise, and one who is not yet old enough for school, but
will be enrolling at Sunrise before we know it!

that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
