Sr. High History
Teaching in a Christian school is a high calling; it comes with great responsibility that allows us to have an impact on eternity. Educating young people is both challenging and exciting. Since joining SCA in the fall of 1998, Kathy has enjoyed getting to know the students and passing along her love for the Lord and His creation. Kathy graduated from Wichita State University and is certified to teach Social Sciences, History and Spanish. She has been married for 26 years and has two children, both are SCA graduates!
In US History, our goal is to study the events that have made this great nation from its discovery to the present . We will carefully consider these events in light of their political, economical, geographical, cultural, and spiritual impact on the United States and the World. We will clearly see God’s providence and provision as our country grows and matures. In addition to a textbook, we will evaluate primary documents, literature from the times, and films and documentaries in our quest to learn and discover. A number of projects will be employed to give students an opportunity for outside research. Creating colonial brochures, presidential campaign posters, and Civil War newspapers are a few examples.
World History is a survey course that begins in the Garden of Eden and culminates with current events and history. First semester we have the opportunity to take a brief look at a number of civilizations in the ancient world. Our first semester ends with the very popular ancient monuments project and contest. Each year students must research and build a model monument that we have studied.
Our 5th grade students are then invited to vote on the best projects. The competition is very competitive and there are prizes for the winners. Second semester begins with a look at the medieval world and the impact of the Roman Church. The Renaissance, Reformation, age of discovery, and major conflicts are also analyzed for their importance and impact on the world. A variety of different methods are utilized to teach the material. Films and documentaries, skits, maps, puzzles, and art projects allow for variety in the classroom.
